Abstract
Background and Objectives£ºWe aimed to investigate the association between alanine aminotransferase (ALT)level and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in patients with bipolar disorder.

Materials and Method£ºA total of 151bipolar patients who visited the psychiatric clinic in Seoul National University Hospital and have all measures for the diagnosis of MetS for 2 years were studied. Participants with normal ALT were divided 3 groups according to the tertiles of ALT levels for each gender.

Results£ºPatients with high ALT level (ALT>40 IU/L, n=21) showed higher level of body mass index, blood pressures, fasting glucose, triglyceride, and waist circumference (WC) and higher chance of MetS, compared to those with normal ALT level (n=130). In overall patients and women, ALT level increased accordingly, as the number of MetS components increased (both p<0.001). Normal ALT subjects were divided into 3 groups according to tertiles of ALT levels. High normal ALT Group (19¡ÂALT¡Â40 IU/L)was more likely to have MetS (odds ratio [OR] 8.72, p=0.001) than low normal ALT group (ALT<13 IU/L). After adjustment for age, OR was 5.77 (p=0.012). Similar results were maintained in each gender.
Conclusion£ºSerum ALT level, even in the normal range, was closely associated with MetS in bipolar patients.
